THE VILLAGES — A state program that promises free home inspections and matching grants to pay for repairs sounds enticing, but the My Safe Florida Home program isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. First and foremost, if you live in The Villages, you don’t qualify for funds from My Safe Florida Home, which was created in 2006 by the Florida Department of Financial Services to help homeowners identify ways that they can strengthen their homes against hurricanes. My Safe Florida Home is tailored to homeowners in the wind-borne debris region, but is being marketed and promoted statewide, which has led to confusion in safer areas far from the coasts. Most My Safe Florida Home surveyors are NOT certified home inspectors.
