Casement window panes are hinged at the sides and close against a frame, generally providing better leakage protection than a sliding window. Slider windows can open to one-half the window’s total area, and they’re less efficient at stopping leaks than some other types. To find windows with the best energy efficiency, look for a label with the window’s ratings from the National Fenestration Rating Council. This nonprofit organization created by the window, door and skylight industry oversees standards testing and ratings for windows. Glazing, or the window’s glass, can be improved to reduce heat and glare, and to protect household furnishings from fading because of exposure to UV rays. Styles include storm windows, sliding and swinging patio doors, roof-mounted windows and window systems such as bay/bow windows, miniature greenhouses and full sunrooms. read more
